AFI - Silver Bleeds The Black Sun... LP

€25.00

For more than three decades, AFI has been in a near-constant process of reinvention. The band has made it their goal to evolve with each album—sometimes dramatically—and never settle too comfortably into one genre or rest on their impressive laurels. This approach has expanded their audience, but also challenged them with a sonic identity that can evolve in wild, unexpected directions.

With their twelfth album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun, AFI are once again at the beginning of a bold new chapter, only this time they've managed to surprise themselves. How can a band known for constantly changing still offer something new? With their twelfth album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun, AFI are once again at the beginning of a bold new chapter, only this time they've managed to surprise even themselves. How does a band known for creative upheaval manage to find ways to pull themselves out of their comfort zone time and time again? Typically, the band began writing an album by immediately diving into the writing process and simply letting their intuitive musical language guide them. For “Silver Bleeds the Black Sun,” however, AFI made a conscious decision to completely change their creative approach.

Normally, the band begins an album by immediately diving into the writing process and simply letting their intuitive musical language guide them. For “Silver Bleeds the Black Sun,” however, AFI decided to consciously change their creative approach completely. This time, it all started with a question: How could they break new ground? The key to progress ultimately lay in AFI's shared past. “We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen,” explains guitarist Jade Puget, who produced and recorded the album. “But eventually we ended up with this mix of death rock and post-punk—all these influences from the '80s and '90s.” “We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen,” explains guitarist Jade Puget, who produced and mixed the album. “But eventually we ended up with this mix of death rock and post-punk—all these influences from the late '70s and early '80s that we grew up with, like Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.” The goal was to create an album with a unique mood, something dreamy and ethereal, and the band members dove headfirst into influences that had always been deeply rooted in AFI's music but now came to the forefront.

Silver Bleeds the Black Sun is dark and otherworldly, but also grandiose and dignified, biting and beautiful at the same time—in other words, it's very AFI, but different from anything the band has done before.
