The Ataris’ “Silver Turns To Rust” LP is being released on Kung Fu and officially brings together for the first time a collection of new songs, re-recorded early compositions, and additional bonus tracks. The album includes, among others, “All Soul’s Day” and “The Graveyard of the Atlantic,” as well as a rough demo version of the often-cited cover of “The Boys of Summer,” which, along with other bonus tracks, rounds out the release.
The material was recorded and mixed by Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Recording; the sessions were done analog, using, among other things, a 1978 Neve 8078 console and vintage amplifiers and microphones, which give the songs a direct, unpretentious texture. Tracks 1–4 feature new material, while several songs from the band’s core repertoire have been documented in this form for the first time; two acoustic demos complement the recordings and offer insight into the songwriting process.
For fans of punk and hardcore, the “Silver Turns To Rust” LP offers a documentary-style look at the band’s songwriting phase and combines studio-fresh takes with raw, unpolished demos. The release on Kung Fu thus serves both as an addition to The Ataris’ discography and as a focused collection of previously unreleased and newly reworked tracks.
