Half Blue/Half White Vinyl
Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits proved to be the breakout disc for The Ataris. Sporting solid production from Joey Cape of the Santa Barbara band Lagwagon, this follow-up to the band's surprising debut "Anywhere But Here" solidified The Ataris' position among the leaders of late-'90s melodic punk rock. The tempos settle down a little on this 1999 release, giving songs like "1*15*96" more of an indie rock feel, but the tight compositions never stray too far from the group's post-revivalist, almost alternative rock sound. When Roe takes a chance by adding a cello line to the acoustic "My Hotel Year," The Ataris show that they are in no way afraid to take risks, with its one-and-a-half-minute running time and furious guitar strumming, the track maintains the record's intensity and sits right along side the rest of the powerful tracks on the album. True to form, The Ataris give solid performances of first-rate material on this LP. Definitely one of their best.
