Divert Off Centre - Alternative Dance Beat TAPE

The band existed around 1982 in Blackpool and released only one clear picture-flexie and one track on a 7''-Sampler. Nothing more,
nothing less. If you search them on the internet, you find this:

"Very rare and obscure one-sided picture flexi disc 7".
This was probably either self-released or came with a fanzine as there is no catalogue number, and is unclear as to the label, although on the actual disc it says "(c) 1982 New Art".

Formed in Lytham, Lancashire - not a million miles away from the Vegas of the North - Divert Off Centre were the self-styled pioneers of alternative dance beat. The band was associated with the ‘Blackpool Rox’ scene of the early eighties, however, their camped up performances and overblown lyrics set them apart from their punky/oi contemporaries.

The first song on this disc eventually topped the ‘Sounds Obscurist Chart’. This was followed by the inclusion of ‘Love In Ephemeral…I Confess' on the Lightbeat Records compilation, ‘A Drop In The Ocean’ - the song peaked at 7 on the aforementioned chart. After a couple of years of inactivity D.O.C. evolved into The October Group, moved to Amsterdam in ‘86 and put out a 12” single, ‘Colours’. The song was favourably reviewed in the NME who described it as, “Compelling for it’s subversive undertones.” Although the band split up a year later their songs have turned up on the Messthetics compilations, and continue to receive airplay on alternative radio shows both in Europe and The States. "

We "digitalized" the two songs from the flexie (still a bit crispy'n'crunchy) and added not only the one track from the "Drop in the ocean"-Sampler, but four (4!!!) unreleased tracks from 1982 in perfect quality!

It's hard to describe their music, but let's try it with a bit Bowie, some Cramps without the Rockabilly-influence, Warsaw/Joy Division....

As the flexie was clear/picture, we decided to keep the look with the cassette! The cover is printed on a foil with a little piece of transparent paper behind for your reading pleasure. Limited 50!
